💡 Good to know in Abu Dhabi
Practical tips before you step out.
Leave luggage at the airport left-luggage desk or a partner storage point on the route (marked ★). Carry only essentials and your passport.
Outside EU roaming: use a data eSIM or the free Wi‑Fi at the airport, malls and metro.
Cards and contactless work almost everywhere, including taxis and the metro. Carry a little cash for souks and boats.
10% in restaurants if service isn't included.
Tap water is desalinated and safe, but most people drink bottled; it's cheap in any shop.
Cover shoulders and knees in mosques, souks and public buildings; women cover their hair in mosques (many lend an abaya and scarf). Take shoes off at the door.
A very safe city. Drink plenty of water and avoid walking in the sun between 11:00 and 16:00 in summer. During Ramadan don't eat, drink or smoke in public in daytime; many places change hours. Distances are big: use taxis or apps between stops; buses cost AED 2–5 with a Hafilat card.
Type G (British) sockets, 230 V: bring an adapter.
Clean, free toilets in malls, metro stations and by mosques (separate ablution areas).

Strict laws
No public displays of affection, no alcohol in the street and zero tolerance for drugs (some codeine medicines need a permit). Don't photograph people without asking, or government buildings.
Dress and respect
In mosques, souks and public buildings cover shoulders and knees; in mosques women cover their hair. Away from beaches, avoid very short or see-through clothes.

Use official taxi ranks or apps with a fixed fare. Turn down rides offered inside the airport arrivals hall.
Sheikh Zayed Grand Mosque · Corniche
Keep a photo of your passport on your phone, carry just one card and some cash, and stick to busy, well-lit streets.

Abu Dhabi has over a trillion US dollars' worth of assets under management in a combination of sovereign wealth funds headquartered there.
Abu Dhabi houses local and federal government offices and is the home of the United Arab Emirates Government and the Supreme Council for Financial and Economic Affairs. The city is home to the UAE's president, a member of the Al Nahyan family. Abu Dhabi's rapid development and urbanisation, coupled with the massive oil and gas reserves and production and relatively high average income, have transformed it into a large, developed metropolis. It is the country's centre of politics and industry, and a major culture and commerce centre. Abu Dhabi accounts for about two-thirds of the roughly $503 billion UAE economy.
