💡 Good to know in San Francisco
Practical tips before you step out.
Leave luggage at the airport left-luggage desk or a partner storage point on the route (marked ★). Carry only essentials and your passport.
Outside EU roaming: a US data eSIM is cheap and works straight away. Free Wi‑Fi at airports, cafés and museums.
Contactless works almost everywhere, including subways and buses (OMNY, Clipper, Ventra…). Prices exclude sales tax (6–10%), added at the till.
Tipping is expected: 18–22% at table-service restaurants, USD 1–2 per drink at bars and 15–20% for taxis. Optional at counters.
Tap water is safe and restaurants serve it free with ice.
Cross only at crosswalks with the walk signal. Leave nothing visible in cars and keep your phone away on Market Street and in the Tenderloin.
Type A/B sockets, 120 V: you need an adapter; check your charger accepts 100–240 V.
Public toilets are rare: use those in museums, malls, hotels, libraries and chain cafés.
Bring layers: even in summer, fog and wind turn chilly in the late afternoon.

🏛️ History & culture of San Francisco
How the city came to be, in a few minutes of reading.
San Francisco, officially the City and County of San Francisco, is the 17th-largest city and second-densest major city in the United States, with a 2025 population of 826,079. It is the fourth-most populous city in California and the second most-populous in the Bay Area. Some 4.6 million residents live in the city's metropolitan statistical area. Around 9.2 million live in the San Jose–San Francisco–Oakland combined statistical area, the fifth-largest in the United States. San Francisco is a global center for technology and finance, and is well-known for its affluence, eclectic architecture, and mild climate.
Prior to European settlement, San Francisco was inhabited by the Yelamu Ohlone. On June 29, 1776, settlers from New Spain established the Presidio of San Francisco at the Golden Gate, and the Mission San Francisco de Asís a few miles away, both named for Francis of Assisi.

The history of the city of San Francisco, California, and its development as a center of maritime trade, were shaped by its location at the entrance to a large natural harbor. San Francisco is the name of both the city and the county; the two share the same boundaries. Only lightly settled by European-Americans at first, after becoming the base for the gold rush of 1849 the city quickly became the largest and most important population, commercial, naval, and financial center in the American West. San Francisco was devastated by a great earthquake and fire in 1906 but was quickly rebuilt. The San Francisco Federal Reserve Branch opened in 1914, and the city continued to develop as a major business city throughout the first half of the 20th century. Starting in the latter half of the 1960s, San Francisco became the city most famous for the hippie movement. In recent decades, San Francisco has become an important center of finance and technology. The high demand for housing, driven by its proximity to Silicon Valley, and the limited availability have led to the city being one of America's most expensive places to live. San Francisco is currently ranked 11th on the Global Financial Centres Index.
